Figlia di Coro Print E-mail

Figlia di Coro (plural: Figlie di Coro) means "Daughter of the Chorus". This title was given to girls in leadership roles in the chorus of the Ospedale della Pietà, a renowned music school and orphanage in Venice, Italy. Antonio Vivaldi was the chief composer at the Ospedale from 1713 until 1740, and much of his music was written expressly for the women and girls there.

The title of Figlia di Coro is awarded to all choristers who satisfy the following requirements:

  • Pass theory test for Level I (9th level).
  • Write a report about a female singer (classical, jazz, or Broadway - NOT pop). She can be a current singer or from any period in history. Listen to recordings of her work (if available), and research her life. When did she realize her talent? What inspired her to sing? How did she become successful? What was/is her family life like, and how did/does it affect her work? Make sure the answers to these questions, as well as any other relevant information, are included in your report.
  • Attend a choral performance. It can be a professional, community, church, or school organization. Write a review of the concert. Discuss repertoire selection, technical preparation (accuracy of pitch and rhythms), vocal technique (breath support, tone, diction), and musical effect (tempo, dynamics, articulation, phrasing, and overall expression). Would you recommend others attend future performances by this group? Why or why not?
  • Compose sight-reading exercises for the lower-level choirs. Write four 8-measure major melodic exercises. Be sure to include the key signature and reference "Do". The meter should be simple, the rhythm should include basic notation, and the melody should be mostly step-wise, with occasional skips in the tonic triad (Do-Mi-Sol). You may use a program like Notepad to print your exercises, or see any of the Artistic Staff for staff paper.
  • ONGOING: Twice monthly (minimum) attend lower-level choir rehearsal and assist the director, and assist with at least one supplemental theory class each month. You may also record this as community service time for your school.
